Lot Essay

Hippolyte-Camille Delpy studied under two of the leading Barbizon figures: Jean-Baptiste Corot and Charles-François Daubigny. Both of the masters had a great influence on Delpy’s final style and his fascination with nature. Delpy first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1869 and soon became one of the most preeminent exponents in what is can be considered as a second generation of Barbizon painters.
The present work is one of the two paintings exhibited by the artist at the 1877 Paris Salon, where it was praised by the critics. As quoted by Michèle Lannoy-Duputel, one contemporary critic wrote on the 12th of June 1877, presumably about the present work: `Mr Camille Delpy has seen nature through Corot and Daubigny’s eyes as much as through his own. Thus he is full of poetry and truth. His two landscapes are bathed in air and show you the most loved horizons’.
