The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

Structural condition
The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what is evidently the original keyed wooden
stretcher. There is a canvas-maker's stamp on the reverse. The overall structural condition
appears to be very good and it is obviously most encouraging to find the canvas in its original
unlined state.
Paint surface
The paint surface has an even varnish layer.
There are some very fine lines of entirely stable drying craquelure within the centre of the sky.
These are only visible upon the closest inspection and are almost inevitable on an unlined
canvas of this period.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows just a few very small spots of inpainting in the sky and
other tiny spots in the landscape, all of which are of minimal size. There is also a very small
area that fluoresces in a different manner, just above the heads of the two standing figures in
the foreground. This may be adhesive applied in the past.
Summary
The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition, having had
minimal intervention in the past, and no work is required.
