Lot Essay

This picture was painted the year before Grimshaw's death, at a time when his oeuvre varied yet again. The year was characterised by works on a smaller scale, and a palette dominated by greens and yellows. The flowers in the foreground are painted with particular delicacy, and the picture recalls Grimshaw's earliest Pre-Raphaelite landscapes painted thirty years previously. Grimshaw worked with the aid of photographs as visual prompts, and this work in particular seems to be of a specific view, as yet unidentifed.
