Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
THIS CONDITION REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR FINE ART CONSERVATION, IN THE CHRISTIE'S WAREHOUSE FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS SALE.
Structural Condition The canvas has been lined and this is ensuring a secure structural support. The lined canvas is attached to a new keyed wooden stretcher. There are some very slight crease marks particularly in the lower right corner, within the dark pigments, which are entirely stable and really only visible in a strong raking light.
Paint Surface The paint surface has an even varnish layer. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows small scattered retouchings in the sky with larger retouchings just above the rooftop and between the branches in the tree on the far right of the composition. There is also an area of retouching within the green pigments in the lower right corner. Some small surface deposits are highlighted under ultraviolet light in the lower left quadrant which could be easily removed.
Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition.
