During the summers in the 1880s, Brett rented Newport Castle in Pembrokeshire, Wales, from Sir Martin Lloyd. This became a base for his large family and enabled him to paint the surrounding landscapes and coastlines.
This painting captures the view from the east corner of Dinas Island, in north Pembrokeshire, at the cove known as Cwm-yr-Eglwys (Valley of the Church).
