The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting has been lined over 50 years ago and is on its original stretcher, which is providing good support. The varnish is discoloured and there are areas of surface dirt. The varnish is scuffed against the site edge of the frame in places. There area couple minor paint losses along the lower edge. Under UV light the old varnish fluoresces, making the paint surface hard to read. There is a four inch area of inpainting to the head of the highest hound. There are also small dots of inpainting to the lowest left hound. There are further areas of inpainting to the neck of the right hand hound in the lower central group. There are two lines of inpainting running horizontally half way up the canvas, possibly addressing stretcher movement, this looks like an older campaign of restoration. The work is presented in an English 18th century style composite frame with a raised outer edge, with numerous chips and losses.
