The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been lined and is on a new stretcher which is providing good support.
There is a pattern of fine craquelure which may account for the lining, however the paint surface is stable.
Under UV light there are some small scatterings of retouching, particularly along and around the lower edge, to the upper and right edges. There are some further scatterings to the sky, including two areas to the right of the horse which have discoloured and are now visible to the naked eye. There is an area to the water at the inside of the horse's hindlegs (which has also discoloured and is visible to the naked eye) and a few small spots to the horse's neck, upper back and forelegs. There is an uneven layer of varnish and the picture appears to have been partially cleaned in the past.
The picture would benefit from a clean and from having the visible areas of restoration looked into.
The picture is presented in an 18th century style gilt painted frame.
