Recently discovered, Cynthia was painted at the height of Godward's career when he had established his métier: tableaux of beautiful young women from antiquity. Here Godward depicts his model bust-length and in profile, with her thick dark hair elaborately braided, coiled and held in place with red ribbons. However, the work is unusual for Godward because instead of the more customary marble background here he has chosen a rich dark drapery. The deep purple of the backdrop contrasts beautifully with the delicate, transparent orange fabric of her dress, fastened at the sleeve with pearl fibulae, demonstrating Godward's mastery of colour and harmony.

A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
THIS CONDITION REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY J.H. COOKE & SONS LTD, INDEPENDENT PICTURE RESTORERS, FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS SALE.
The painting is in very good condition. It is unlined and evenly tensioned on its original stretcher. The bond between paint, preparation and canvas is good and the painting is structurally stable. The paint surface is in good condition with little retouching, almost all of which are to framing abrasions at the extreme edge of the picture. Any touches present have been made in pure pigment within the varnish layer and may be clearly seen under UV illumination.
