Lot Essay

The present drawing was taken from a sketchbook, and worked up into a highly finished watercolour. It corresponds closely to a photograph of this scene taken by Southall, giving an interesting insight into his working methods. The closely cropped composition and the bustling figures in the foreground give a sense of the hectic life of the port town, while the dog looking out at us to the lower left pauses to draw us in.
