PHILIP ALEXIUS DE LÁSZLÓ (BRITISH, 1869-1937)
Tina Meller, née Agustina Marqués López, wife of Manuel de Izarduy
Tina Meller was at the height of her popularity in 1929, receiving positive reviews in Wake up and Dream with music by Cole Porter at the London Palladium: 'An actress as well as dancer and has a hard, flashing manner that is a genuine style. She commands the stage as much by the power of mind as by that of movement.' Monte Cristo, the second of her two films, was also released that year; she had previously performed in Michel Strogoff in 1926. Her sister Raquel Meller (1888-1962) was an internationally successful actress and performer. They were born in Tarazon, Aragón to Telesforo Marqués Ibañez and his wife Isabel López Sainz.
De László found her particularly fascinating and made a number of portraits of the Spanish actress and dancer: a finished three-quarter length, a full-length study and a preparatory drawing. The artist also filmed her dancing in his studio garden using his Ciné-Kodak model B, a gift from George Eastman in 1926.
The National Portrait Gallery collection has three photographs of Tina, taken by Ottoline Morell, in July 1929.
We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this portrait, which is included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com.

UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE
Structural condition The artist's board has an even profile and is structurally sound. There is some wear around the outer edges and in the corners, where the fibre of the board has been disturbed. This is almost inevitable on a board of this type. There are also areas of slightly raised and brittle craquelure, particularly in the darker pigments of the sitter's hair, which would benefit from localised consolidation. Paint surface The paint surface has a rather uneven and opaque varnish layer and would benefit from surface cleaning and revarnishing to ensure a more even surface coating. This would also give the paint surface more depth and resonance. The areas of slightly raised craquelure would need to be consolidated prior to cleaning. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a number of retouchings within the dark pigments of the sitter's hair and costume and further retouchings in the background, and in particular in the upper right of the background. There would appear to be only the most minimal spots on the sitter's face. The retouchings that have been applied are undoubtedly excessive, and larger than is really required. If they were to be removed during the cleaning process they could be replaced with more minimal and careful inpainting where found to be necessary. Summary The painting therefore does have some condition issues but should respond well to localised consolidation, cleaning, restoration and revarnishing.
