Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CONDITION REPORT WAS PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR, AN INDEPENDENT PAINTINGS CONSERVATOR UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE Structural Condition The artist's panel is structurally sound and secure with an even profile. There is a repaired split n the panel, running in from the left vertical edge, which is approximately 14 cm below the upper horizontal edge. This is stable and secure. Paint surface The paint surface has an even varnish layer. There are a number of surface deposits on the paint surface. Inspection under ultraviolet shows small scattered retouchings, including a horizontal line approximately 15 cm in length which relates to the repaired split mentioned above. There are also small scattered retouchings within the clouds and minimal spots within the water, boats and architects details, all of which are of minimal size. There is also an inverted V-shaped retouching in the sky, just below the centre of the upper horizontal edge, which covers a knot in the wood. There are small retouchings around the outer edges and in the corners. A number of these retouchings appear to be slightly larger than is really necessary and could be reduced with more minimal retouching. There may be other retouchings that I could not identify under ultraviolet light. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition and no further work is require for reason of conservation.
