inscribed 'King Acrisius having dreamed that/ he should be slain by the hand [of] his daughter/ Danae built a ... tower to shut Danae there in/ as long as she lived, thinking so to/ undo the ... of the Gods.' (verso) and with inscription 'Father several times amused/ himself when he had finished/ a picture, by doing a Rubens/ version of it./ M.M.' (on an old label, in Margaret Mackail's hand)

The artist, by whom given to his granddaughter,
Angela Margaret Thirkell (née Mackail) (1890-1966), and by descent to her son,
Graham Campbell McInnes (1912-1970), by whom given to his son, and by descent.
