Lot Essay

The first drawing in this lot is a study for Diana and Endymion (Manchester Art Gallery). Painted in 1901, it depicts Diana, nude and swathed in diaphanous drapery, floating above the sleeping Endymion, in a woodland glade full of poppies. The present drawing must be an early study as the positioning of the arms was swapped in the finished picture: pentimenti to the right arm is visible here.
