The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
THIS CONDITION REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR FINE ART CONSERVATION,
IN THE CHRISTIE'S WAREHOUSE FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS SALE.
UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE
Structural condition
The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what is evidently the original keyed wooden
stretcher. The canvas in inscribed in the upper left as seen from the reverse and there is a
canvas maker's stamp in the upper right. The canvas is taut and even and the overall structural
condition appears to be very good.
Paint surface
The paint surface has an even varnish layer.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows small scattered retouchings including a number of
small spots and lines in the background, minimal spots and lines on the sitter's left arm and
hand and some fine lines infilling craquelure in the dark shadows by the sitter's waistband.
There are the most tiny flecks of retouching on the sitter's lips and other very minimal
retouchings. It should be stressed that these retouchings are all of minimal size. There may be
retouchings that I could not identify under ultraviolet light.
Summary
The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition and no further
work is required.
