This rare still-life study of two pheasants dates from late in Millais’s career, painted around 1875. It represents the artist’s favourite pursuits in Scotland – painting and shooting, although the tangible results of his shooting were rarely committed to canvas.

The panel is stable and is providing good support. There is some surface dirt along the left hand edge corresponding to some old frame rubbing. The varnish has quite a high sheen. Under UV light the picture appears to have been partially cleaned in the past. There appear to be a few minor spots of retouching to the ground around the head of the right hand pheasant.
