The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
THIS CONDITION REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR FINE ART CONSERVATION,
IN THE CHRISTIE'S WAREHOUSE FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS SALE.
Structural Condition
The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what appears to be the original keyed
wooden stretcher. This is providing a stable structural support.
Paint Surface
The paint surface has an even varnish layer. There is an area to the left of the sitter's right arm
where the varnish appears to be very slightly blanching.
There is a small area of craquelure to the right of the sitter in the background. This is stable
and only visible upon very close inspection. There is another area of craquelure in the
background above the sitter's right shoulder, which is also stable and only visible upon very
close inspection.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a small retouching in the lower right of the
composition, close to the lower horizontal turnover edge, measuring approximately 1.5 cm by
0.5 cm.
Summary
The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition.
