The canvas has been lined and is on what is probably the original stretcher which is providing good support. There is some craquelure in the sky, some of which is starting to lift in the sky above the trees, left of centre and near the right hand trees. There is some ingrained surface dirt.

Under UV light there are significant areas of restoration in the sky and along the left and lower edges. There are some further areas of retouching in the foreground and to the path to the left of the donkey, and to the donkey's head and back. There are some scatterings in the foliage of the left hand trees and the bushes at the right edge of the canvas. Some small scatterings elsewhere. There are remnants of old discoloured varnish to most of the picture apart from the sky.

The picture is presented in what may be the original elaborately carved and gilded frame.
