Although previously identified as the artist's wife, Agnes McSymon Rogerson, this portrait painted circa 1919 clearly depicts a younger woman than Agnes whom he had married in 1885. The couple had four sons, two of whom Ian and David, were also printmakers. A third Peter played rugby for England. They also had a daughter.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The varnish has discoloured and would benefit from being re-varnished. Under UV light the old varnish is reflecting, most evident in the background. There are possible small touches of inpainting to her right eye and to the darker area of her neck. Due to the reflective quality of the varnish, it is difficult to read any earlier restoration. The work is presented in a gilded early 20th century composite frame.
