A group of three works, comprising:

MAUGHAM, William Somerset (1874-1965). Ashenden or The British Agent. London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1928.
Signed first edition of Maugham’s masterpiece of spy fiction, which ‘lifts the secret service sleuth high above the conventional conception of the spy-catcher' (Queen's Quorum 78). Stott A37a. Octavo. (First and last leaves lightly browned, a few minor marginal marks.) Original blue-green cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in gilt, lower cover with publisher’s device in blind, upper cover with Maugham’s device stamped in blind (extremities somewhat rubbed, head- and tailcap bruised, spine faded); original dust-jacket (spine slightly sunned and with faint vertical crease, small chips with minor loss to letters on lower panel, lightly tanned and spotted, a few short tears and one long tear to fold); housed in custom blue quarter morocco clamshell box.

First UK edition, first issue, with the sheets unsigned. Stott A25b. Octavo. 10pp. of publisher’s ads at end, first issue with Eli of the Downs at the bottom of second page (pp. 243-252 with small marginal tears two leaves of ads partially browned). Original blue-green cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in gilt, lower cover with publisher’s device in blind, upper cover with Maugham’s device stamped in blind (extremities bumped and lightly rubbed, upper hinge cracked and lower starting, endpapers browned); original dust-jacket (spine faded, a few small chips, long tears along folds but still holding).
