STRAVINSKY, Igor (1882-1971). Autograph quotation, five bars from Agon signed ('I. Stravinsky') and inscribed to Michael Barrie 'with affectionate thoughts', June 1958; [and] photograph of Igor and Vera Stravinsky signed ('I. Str') and inscribed 'Love to Michel', also signed by Vera, 1957.

The quotation in pencil, five bars in one system of three staves for flutes and strings, the inscription in red ink, on one leaf, approx. 125 x 205mm; the photograph approx. 180 x 130mm. Framed and glazed.

A signed quotation from Agon. The ballet's unusually long gestation between 1953 and 1957 covered the transition in Stravinsky's compositional style from diatonic to twelve-tone. The title, which Stravinsky characteristically lettered, as here, in Greek capitals, translates as 'contest' or 'struggle'. The recipient may be Jay Michael Barrie (1912-2001), personal secretary to Stravinsky's friend Gerald Heard.
