Rare presentation copy of the first UK edition, inscribed by the author to her secretary, amanuensis and close friend Charlotte 'Carlo' Fisher: 'To dear Carlo from Agatha.' This was the second full-length Miss Marple mystery after Murder at the Vicarage, published twelve years earlier. It was first published in the U.S. in February 1942 and in May in the U.K. Hubin p. 80.

Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in black (spine sunned, top edge slightly dusty); original dust-jacket supplied from another copy (chipped at head and foot of spine and fold ends, short tear at foot of lower spine fold, lower panel slightly toned/dust-stained, slight wear along folds, small restoration at centre-right of upper panel, price-clipped). Provenance: Charlotte 'Carlo' Fisher (1895-1976, secretary, amanuensis and close friend of Agatha Christie; presentation inscription by the author on front free endpaper, and with Fisher’s posthumous book label).
