MONK, Thelonious Sphere (1917-1982).

Striped silk necktie in blue, brown, copper and silver, personally owned by Thelonious Monk, c.1970s, gifted to Charlie Watts by Mick Jagger, the tie labelled ‘A. Sulka & Company’, together with a postcard from Mick Jagger, signed and inscribed in black ink ‘Happy Birthday Charlie, Love Mick, 2019’; accompanied by a letter of provenance from Arlan Ettinger, founder and president of Guernsey's, New York.

According to the accompanying letter, ‘Guernsey’s represented the family of Thelonious Monk and a friendship ensued between his son, T.S. Monk and Guernsey’s. A few days prior to the auction T.S. Monk and his wife gave Arlan Ettinger, president of Guernsey’s, this tie as a token of appreciation.’ Provenance: T.S. Monk (by descent) – Arlan Ettinger (gift of T.S.
