First edition, number 214 of 250 copies, of a sumptuously-illustrated biography of Bakst, reproducing his stage and costume designs, including sketches and a portrait of the artist by Modigliani. From the library of the American magazine and children's books illustrator Elizabeth Shippen Green and her husband, Huger Elliot, architecture professor at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard.

Large folio. Colour-printed portrait of Bakst by Modigliani, 68 mounted colour plates, tissue guards with printed captions and publisher's stamp (occasional faint finger soiling). Original vellum, lettered and decorated in black (faintly rubbed and soiled, split across spine above title, minor repair to head); housed in custom red half morocco box. Provenance: Huger Elliott and Elizabeth Shippen Green Elliott (ownership inscription dated 1925 and printed gift label).
