Lot Essay

George Jacob maître in 1765.
The splat for this chair is reminiscent of the distinctive trellis motif employed by Georges Jacob in chairs supplied for Marie Antoinette's dairy at Rambouillet in 1787 and which became a staple of the Jacob dynasty's oeuvre. The celebrated painter Hubert Robert (1733-1808) had provided the design which was inspired by the Antique and simulated the leather straps found on chairs of that period in Rome. For an analogous example see Christie's, 7 December 2006, lot 1.
