Lot Essay

These candelabra beautifully exemplify Egyptian influence in the decorative arts during the Consulat period. Following Napoleon's military campaign in Egypt from 1795-1799, the public's interest in stories, history and art of the region was high, but it was cemented as integral forevermore thanks to archaeologist Baron Dominique Vivant Denon (1747-1825). In 1802 Denon published the popular Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte pendant les campagnes du Général Bonaparte, which featured a plethora of drawings on Egyptian motifs including herms, caryatids and palm leaves; as exemplified in these candelabra. Denon's influence was such that he was later appointed director of the Central Museum of Arts (now known as the Louvre).
