The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
We have sought to record changes in condition of the piece after its initial manufacture.
Vase with elephant handles: The interior of the mouth and
the exterior of the neck to at least the ruyi border have been oversprayed to
conceal assumed damage to the mouthrim. There is fritting to both elephant
handles. The entire exterior of the vase appears to be covered in a very thin
shellac-like coating.
Square section vase: The vase exhibits minute firing pits
and burst glaze bubbles across all sides of the exterior. The side of the neck
with circular cartouche has two chips to the surface. There is the expected
minor wear to the edge of the mouth. Each mask-form handle has one shallow chip
to the forehead. There is the expected abrasion to the unglazed foot and a
short crack that extends from the base of the side with the lady across the
footrim and into the interior of the foot.
Celadon-ground vase: Has a 2 3/8 in. section of the interior mouth that appears to be a flaw in the manufacture that was possibly restuck at the time of firing, with a short haircrack that runs through the center of it, and abrasions to the stained edges of the area. There are two chips to the mouth and scattered firing pits to the interior of the neck and body. There are several long haircracks to the side of the vase with the figural scene, as well as a few firing cracks to the handles. There is the expected abrasion to the unglazed foot.
