A BLUE AND WHITE BOWL
XUANTONG SIX-CHARACTER MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE AND OF THE PERIOD (1908-1911)
The bowl is decorated on the exterior with the Eight Trigrams withn roundels, interspersed with clouds and phoenixes above a band of crashing waves. The interior is decorated with a lotus-and-wave motif within double-circles below a band of diaper-pattern and lotuses. Together with a very small copper-red-decorated blue and white cup inscribed on the base with a Guangxu six-character mark in underglaze blue and of the period (1875-1908).
5 3/8 and 2 1/8 in. (13.7 and 5.4 cm.) diam.

The Rende Zhai (House of Benevolent Learning) Collection, 1949-1970s, in the United States before 1990.

Lot Essay

The trigrams within the medallions belong to the Eight Trigrams or ba gua, traditional symbols of divination which were recorded in the Yi Jing, Book of Changes.
