The figure is shown in full-length flowing robes, with prominent eyes, bushy eyebrows and facial hair, on a globular base modeled with reeds aloft swirling, foamy waves.

Provenance
The Rende Zhai (House of Benevolent Learning) Collection, 1949-1970s, in the United States before 1990.

The figure depicted is Bodhidharma, otherwise known as Damo, crossing the Yangxi River. Damo was a legendary Indian monk who traveled to China in the sixth century, and is considered the patriarch of Chan (Zen) Buddhism.
