Lot Essay

The depiction of the many boys stems from the theme of baizi tu ('hundred boys'), that is found on many Chinese decorative arts and reflects a family's desire for numerous sons. On many works, the children are shown at play, while some are depicted engaging in scholarly pursuits, suggesting that one day they will become successful officials.
