Lot Essay

The present figure depicts the Buddha Shakyamuni as an ascetic prior to his enlightenment. The Buddha underwent periods of extreme fasting, and the effect this privation had on his body is illustrated by the protruding ribs and spine of the kneeling figure.

Compare this lot with a gilt-bronze seated figure of the ascetic Shakyamuni, slightly larger in size, sold at Christie's New York, 18 September 2014, lot 709.
