Lot Essay

The frame of the upper cabinet is recessed from its base, and its smaller size and more squat proportions in relationship to those of the lower cabinet make this an unusual example. Typically on cabinets of this type, the frames are flush and the proportions are grand. However, variations of this type are known. A huanghuali compound cabinet of similar construction, also of more squat form, is illustrated by G. Ecke in Chinese Domestic Furniture, Vermont and Tokyo, 1962, p;. 134, no. 106. See, also, a tall huanghuali cabinet (219.7 cm. high), with recessed hat chest sold at Christie's New York, 22-23 March 2012, lot 1739, dated to the 17th-18th century.
