Lot Essay

This present lot is from a 'sample set' as Dr. Shirley Mueller notes in 'Chinese Export Porcelain Curiosities', Oriental Art, 2000, vol. XLVI, no. I, pp. 25-26. It is painted with the initials AJ or AT and was likely a part of a larger service exported from China to trading countries. 'Sample sets' allowed clients to choose from stock borders, which would lower the overall cost of producing and personalizing service pieces. Mueller describes that there were often eight possible borders present on the 'sample' piece for the client to choose from.
