D.S. Howard (Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p. 960) writes "This is an unusual example of the failure of the Chinese painters to understand the European instructions sent with the original drawing or bookplate....Only one other example of this type of error is known", and suggests that the Chinese may have been overly scrupulous with the order as the arms on a service made five years earlier for another Dobree had been painted incorrectly.

Each with wear to the enamel and gilt decoration; with some fritting to the rims, particularly to the plate; the plate with two small shallow chips and a rim chip near 5 o'clock and another at 9 o'clock, with a network of hairline cracks to the underside; the platter with a shallow chip to the reverse rim; each with glue residue to the underside. Examined under ultraviolet light.
The grant not examined out of frame; with undulation to the sheet and scattered water stains. The case with considerable wear.
