Lot Essay

The arms are those of Sayer impaling Talbot, likely commemorating the marriage of Exton Sayer and his wife Catherine Talbot in 1705. Catherine was the daughter of William Talbot (1658 - 1730), Bishop of Oxford and later Durham. In the 1720s Exton Sayer served as a member of Parliament before losing his life in riding accident in 1731. See D.S. Howard, op. cit., p. 164-165 for a discussion of this service and family. Also compare the charger with almost identical decoration and bearing the coat-of-arms and crest of Exton's father in law, William Talbot, Bishop of Durham, in the collection of the British Museum, London (Museum No. Franks.734.+).
