Lot Essay

This rare decoration, with its somewhat European battlements and domed towers, is known in a small number of large-scale famille verte and blue and white pieces from the Kangxi period. Compare a pair of blue and white jars and covers sold Christie's, London, 7 April 1997, and for a single example in the RA Collection, see M.A.P. de Matos, The RA Collection of Chinese Ceramics, London, 2011, p. 279.
The Tibor Collection was formed over decades, growing to encompass every category of Chinese export porcelain, from small, charming teawares to massive pairs of important jars. The collector had a deep appreciation for the magnificent porcelains made for New Spain as well as for the lifelike charm and elegance of Chinese porcelain figure and animal models.
