Author Adrien von Ferscht has suggested that the motif of bamboo growing amongst rocks is significant of “steadfastness” and “humility”; together representing the virtuous qualities of a Confucian gentleman and strongly associated with the literati. Additionally the inclusion of magpies could represent a wish for marital bliss.
We are grateful to Adrien von Ferscht for identifying the artisan workshop. For further information please see Adrien von Ferscht, Chinese Export Silver 1785-1940 – The Definitive Collectors’ Guide, 4th Edition, Glasgow and Beijing, January 2015.

Presents well overall. With double-wall construction, base with a slight gap but seemingly fine. Footrim very slightly out of round. With scattered surface scratches and minor wear, as to be expected from age and use.
