Lot Essay

The 1950’s was a truly significant decade for Rolex, ushering in the Submariner, the Explorer, the Milgauss, the Turn-o-graph and of course, the Day-Date, or as it’s referred to by collectors, the “President”.

The President, born in the 1950’s, has become the brands signature status watch and remains so to present day. What makes the President model so interesting is that its DNA is intimately connected to critical elements of the watch, the day and date displays, and almost always a precious metal. Following these simple guidelines left Rolex with great opportunity to explore variations in case finishing, bezels, dials, as well as embellishment, and explore they did.

Reference 18388 is an example of incredible Rolex ingenuity as it relates to the President, a rare reference characterized by its round diamond set lugs and bezel and rarely are two identical watches seen. The present lot, offered in exceptional condition with its original box, booklets, certificate, intact caseback sticker and original purchase receipt from Beyer, also has a spectacular pave diamond dial with mother of pearl hour track and applied 18k gold roman numerals. A President of this rarity and quality could easily be the cornerstone of any collection.
