One of the most iconic Rolex models ever produced, reference 8171 is commonly referred to by collectors as the Padellone, or frying pan, a reference not only to the size of the watch but its convex dial. The 8171, at 38mm, is extraordinarily modern in size and was a fair bit ahead of its time in this regard. Released in the 1950’s alongside another iconic Rolex, reference 6062, the 8171 and 6062 represent among the most complicated watches manufactured by Rolex at the time and are the only two vintage Rolex references produced in serial with a calendar and moonphase. Scholars believe that during it’s very short production period, no more than 350 examples of the 8171 were made in yellow gold.
Coming from the family of the original owner in the Midwestern United States, the present watch in 18k yellow gold is in wonderful all original and unrestored condition with hallmarks present on the back of the lug as well as the band of the mid case at 9 o’clock. And, as if a well preserved case were not enough, the dial has developed an even, warm, and pleasing patina that gives the watch a very beautiful and romantic vintage look.
Not unlike many 8171 made in gold, the coronet and serial number on this watch, which was only very lightly engraved in the caseback at the factory, has been lost to time. No doubt however that this exceptionally beautiful example of the iconic Rolex “Padellone” will delight its new owner with each and every glance.
