Lot Essay

Introduced in 1958, the Tudor “Big Crown” reference 7924 is one of the rarest sport watches produced by Tudor. Made only in 1958 and 1959 with serial numbers ranging from 275XXX to 295XXX, reference 7924 is an exceptionally rare watch and a grail among Tudor collectors and dive watch collectors worldwide.

The 7924 was Tudor’s most capable dive watch in the late 1950’s. With its thick and robust stainless steel case and oversized 8mm crown. Rated at 200meters/660feet, the 7924 was Tudor’s offering alongside Rolex reference 6538 and reference 5510. In fact, aside from the movement and dial, the Tudor 7924 is identical to its iconic Rolex big crown brothers.

The only vintage big crown produced in series by Tudor, the 7924 is also the last no crown guard 200 meter depth rated dive watch made by the brand before adopting crown guards in late 1959 on reference 7928.

The present watch is a wonderful original example of an early 7924 which has developed a gorgeous tropical patina to the dial and hands. While the watch is pictured without a bezel and bracelet, included with the watch is its original bezel, later replacement insert, and a stretch oyster bracelet from 1 ’56 with 64 ends pieces. Opportunities to acquire reference 7924 are few and far between. The new owner of the present watch will add a trophy to their collection and simultaneously gain access to a small group of proud 7924 owners.
