Lot Essay

Aside from diamonds, sapphires are one of the most popular precious stones and technically, as a variety of the mineral corundum, can appear in many colors. However, blue is the color most associated with sapphires. Mined in Myanmar, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Madagascar, Cambodia and Australia, most sapphires are heat treated today to realize their desired color.

The 8.02 carats and 8.45 carats cushion-shaped sapphires were purchased in the 1960’s by the consignor on their first trip to Ceylon and were only recently sent to the Gemological Institute of America to confirm that they are unheated. The color, clarity and brilliance exhibited in both stones are very typical of Ceylon stones. Of course Ceylon sapphires had their moment when HRH Prince Charles proposed to Lady Diana Spencer with a 12 carat cushion-shaped stone, surrounded by diamonds.
