Anastasia Lebedev’s artistic practice spans drawing, pottery, textile art and jewellery making, with a sustained focus on the evocative medium of cyanotypes – a blend of historical reverence and contemporary innovation.

This printing method, developed by Sir John Herschel in the 19th century, is known for its bright Prussian-blue images and its fundamental role in early photography and engineering blueprints. Anastasia’s exploration of cyanotypes is deeply influenced by her admiration for Victorian art, particularly the groundbreaking work of botanist Anna Atkins, whose 1843 publication, featuring algae cyanotypes, is celebrated as the first book illustrated with photographic images. By reimagining this historical process, Anastasia incorporates modern materials and experimental techniques, creating works that honour the past while pushing the boundaries of the medium.

Having successfully sold her cyanotypes in previous Christie's auctions, the artist continues to build upon this legacy of reinvigorating this nearly forgotten art form, blending botanical inspirations with a contemporary aesthetic. These works not only pay homage to a rich historical and artistic legacy but also stand as innovative contributions to the ongoing dialogue in the world of photography and printmaking.
