Lot Essay

Bérénice Martin is a multidisciplinary designer with a strong background in Art and Architecture. Her work ranges across a spectrum of disciplines, from product to set design and architecture. With a playful approach to the design of spaces and objects, a recurrent theme in her projects is the use of concept of ambiguity and appropriation. By adding a modern twist to the existing, her current and recent work focuses on abstract forms borrowed from traditional objects. At times, it is a simple shift in material and its application, such as the creation of Victorian frames reimagined in cardboard. When looking at things and objects from a different perspective, made from modest materials such as cardboard it turns the concept of luxury upside down with unpretentious beauty. With today’s world challenges in saving natural resources, once overlooked and used as abundant raw materials, timber, cardboard and paper are becoming scarce and sought after.
