Lot Essay

Brother Derick is a passionate woodworker who studied Fine Art: Sculpture at the University of Brighton. His artworks exalt the versatility of wood and how it is fundamentally tied with people. Wood has been, and remains, a vital material throughout human evolution. In urban environments, where we commonly only encounter processed lumber, we often overlook that wood comes from a finite and living source, with each tree being as different from one another as you or I. This symbiosis with trees is the pivotal reason that even in a technologically advancing world of metal and plastic, wood is not superseded.

Wild Chairs – Birch takes inspiration from Italian designer Andrea Branzi’s neoprimitive style, as well as Do Ho Suh’s sculptural works which emphasise the relationship between people, objects, and memories. The chairs straddle the dichotomy between nature and the manmade, being firmly planted in the rewilding movement, while the name humorously anthropomorphises them as more than objects. For the artist, these characterful pieces evoke core memories rooted in his childhood, but for new audiences they offer an invitation – stop, sit, and smell the roses.
