Lot Essay

Dorina Schmidt has an extensive background in fine art. She studied in fine art institutions from a young age until graduating high school in Budapest with mentors including Hungarian contemporary artists. Dorina won several regional art competitions during her studies. From a fine art environment, it was a natural choice to study Art History with Business Management at the University of Exeter where she broadened her interest in art and gained a knowledge of the business side of the field. Growing up in a creative space shaped her vision and the way she sees the world. Dorina tried out various forms of art from collage to oil painting. Nowadays, she finds a great source of inspiration in simple, everyday objects such as food, where she can experiment with colours and textures.

“Food can be such a versatile subject, yet everyone knows the taste of fresh blueberries. This particular piece reminds me of my local market in Budapest where you can buy enormous organic blueberries. It almost looks like the blueberries are examining the viewer with their eyes. I love the calming colours of blues, purples and greens in them. It always shows a different colour when the light hits the fruit. It doesn’t want to be complicated, however, the colours make it mysterious. A simple piece, yet each fruit gives you a different perspective because of the varying colours, sizes and shapes.”
