Lot Essay

Henry Francis is a researcher in the Post War and Contemporary Art department at Christie's. Henry views painting as an important outlet for the constant creative stimulation and exposure to art that comes from working in an auction house. Henry’s inspirations include the richly textured and multicultural urban environments of South London, where he lives and works, as well as the intersection between manual and mechanical processes.

Untitled (Column) is from an ongoing series works based on photographic source material gathered while exploring the city. Henry was initially drawn to the reflections how the extreme close crop makes the familiar image of a motorcycle unfamiliar, blurring the boundary between realism and abstraction, and how the metallic surfaces reflect snippets of the surrounding streets.
