Lot Essay
Leo Buckingham (1979-2021) Leo showed his artistic potential from a young age and was encouraged by his art teacher at Sibford School. He did the Art and Design course at Banbury Art School and then went to Bournemouth to do the 3D Design course. He worked for several years in London and Pinewood Studios on Motion Capture, a post-production film operation and contributed to such films as Gladiator. During these years, he continued to do life drawing in evening classes. In 2008, he decided to return to University to do a Fine Arts degree at Middlesex. He worked evenings and weekends at Pizza Express to help with the finances. He loved this period of hands-on artwork and became very knowledgeable about Art History. On leaving, he worked at the National Gallery for three years and then joined Christie's, where he worked until he was killed in a tragic accident on his way home from work. In recent years, he had been experimenting with various uses of Graphite and has produced several enormous canvases, using unusual and innovative methods. He left several portfolios of work, for which we are grateful. Written by Judith Buckingham, Leo's mother
