Lot Essay

Deeply influenced by Helen Frankenthaler and Munch, LU's works present emotions and memories in an abstract expressionism form. The subjects, on one level, come from the artist's emotions in daily life, interestingly from the pop culture – a music album, a reality show, a podcast – and on a universal level, from the diaspora to sea life and climate change.

Living by the sea in a foreign country for almost ten years, LU has a strong belief that everything is fluid – emotions, memories, identities, and even nature – thus, the compositions always suggest an organic and morphing form. Typically guiding the fluid paints on canvas by hands and brushes, the artist explores the interconnectedness of Eastern ink painting and Western Gestural painting. The thin white lines add final touches to the tableaus and pay tribute to the traditional Chinese Calligraphy practices in the artist's original culture.
