Lot Essay
'The Branch of Salzburg' takes inspiration from the idea of crystallization, a term by French writer Stendhal in 1822. This concept explains how new love makes us see everything about the loved one as beautiful and perfect.
In 1818, Stendhal visited the salt mines in Hallein near Salzburg with his friend Madame Gherardi. They noticed a cool phenomenon: miners would toss a bare branch into an abandoned part of the mine. After a few months, the branch would be covered in sparkling salt crystals, turning it into a dazzling, almost magical object. The tiniest twigs would glisten with countless crystals, making the original branch unrecognizable.
On sunny, dry days, miners would show these glittering branches to travellers about to enter the mines, offering a beautiful reminder of how ordinary things can transform into something extraordinary. "The Branch of Salzburg" captures this process, symbolizing how time and nature can turn simplicity into brilliance.
