Lot Essay

Mira El-Khalil established herself as an emerging artist when she gained significant attention for her 2019 solo exhibition MAWJA. Her work is included in prestigious private collections across the Middle East, such as the MAC collection by Johnny and Nadine Mokbel. El-Khalil holds a Master's degree in Art Business from Sotheby's Institute of Art and has earned numerous scholastic awards training at the painting school of Fabriano. Her second solo exhibition, HOSN, took place in London in the fall of 2022. She has also participated in group exhibitions in Beirut, Lebanon, alongside acclaimed artists like Paul Guiragossian, Jean-Marc Nahas, and Tom Young.

The subject of El-Khalil's artworks is the famous burnt-by-war Holiday Inn Hotel haunting the centre-city of Beirut. What’s left of the building is its large cement skeleton serving as a reminder of the 1975 Civil War. The building was designed by André Wogenscky, a student of French modernist architect Le Corbusier, alongside Lebanese architect Maurice Hindie.
