Lot Essay

Founded just after the first decade of the 19th century, Louis Audemars & Cie. was a company that stood out amongst other watchmakers in the region of the Le Brassus, Genève. While other skilled watchmakers strove to produce parts of a watch to companies for sale, Louis-Benjamin Audemars (1782-1833) and his sons also produced parts but were in addition one of the first to produce the entire watch from movement to case. This won the family a very highly-respected position in their region of watchmakers in the Vallée de Joux, and they are still heavily revered today. The company closed at the end of the 19th century after considerable achievement. The dial and movement are signed, “Ls. Audemars, Brassus & Genève,” and the cuvette is signed; “Nelson R. Sagers, Des Moines Iowa.” This would indicate that the movement and dial were produced by Louis Audemars while the case is American-made.
